Assumptions we use
  • Electricity rate: your state's average (shown in results).
  • Production: state peak sun hours × 365 × 80% system efficiency × shade factor.
  • Panels: 430 W each. Output declines 0.5% per year.
  • Power you make, up to what you use, is valued at your full rate. Extra power sent to the grid is valued at half your rate.
  • No federal tax credit for homeowner-owned systems installed in 2026.

Calculator questions

Why doesn't the calculator include the 30% federal tax credit?

The federal residential clean energy credit ended for systems installed after December 31, 2025. If you lease or use a PPA, the company that owns the system may still use business credits, which can lower your monthly price.

What is a good price per watt?

Most US homeowners see quotes between $2.50 and $3.50 per watt before incentives. Prices are often lower in competitive markets and higher for complex roofs or premium equipment.

Should I cover more than 100% of my use?

Only if you expect to use more electricity soon, for example with an EV or heat pump, and your utility pays fairly for exported power.
