Heat pumps
Heating and cooling that costs less to run
Heat pumps replace your furnace and air conditioner with one efficient system. See how much you could save by switching.
How it works
Why heat pumps are taking over
Moves heat, doesn't make it
Like a fridge in reverse, a heat pump moves heat from outside air into your home, even when it's cold.
Two systems in one
In summer it runs backward, pulling heat out of your home as a high-efficiency air conditioner.
Up to 3x more efficient
Modern units deliver 2 to 4 units of heat for every unit of electricity they use.
Savings estimator
What could you save on heating?
Typical savings ranges from US energy studies. Results depend on your climate, home insulation and local fuel and electricity prices.
Types and costs
Find the right heat pump for your home
Typical installed price ranges in the US, before any rebates.
| Type | Best for | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Ducted air-source | Replaces a furnace and central AC using your existing ducts. | $12,000-$20,000 |
| Ductless mini-split | Wall or ceiling units for homes without ducts, additions or problem rooms. | $4,000-$7,000 per zone |
| Cold-climate heat pump | Rated to keep heating efficiently below 0°F; ideal for the North. | $14,000-$24,000 |
| Geothermal (ground-source) | Pipes buried in the yard tap steady ground temperature; highest efficiency. | $25,000-$45,000 |
| Heat pump water heater | Pulls heat from the air to warm water, using about a third of the energy. | $2,500-$5,000 |
Myth busting
"Heat pumps don't work in the cold." Not anymore.
Cold-climate models keep heating efficiently well below freezing and are widely used in Maine, Minnesota and Canada. Proper sizing and good insulation matter more than the thermometer.
- Ask for a Manual J load calculation, not a rule of thumb
- Seal air leaks and add attic insulation first for the best results
- Look for cold-climate ratings if winters drop below 5°F
- Pair with solar to cut your heating bill even further
Heat pump questions
Is there still a federal tax credit for heat pumps?
The federal 25C credit for heat pumps ended for equipment installed after December 31, 2025. Many states and utilities still offer rebates, so check local programs.
Do I need to replace my ducts?
Usually not. Ducted heat pumps can use existing ductwork if it's in good condition and sized correctly. Ductless mini-splits need no ducts at all.
Will my electric bill go up?
Yes, but your gas, oil or propane bill goes down or away. For most homes switching from propane, oil or electric resistance heat, the total drops.
